China travel diaries: joining the EV revolution

BYD super car

The latest models, sleek designs, state of the art technology and reliability – that’s what we pride ourselves on offering, even if you only need a car for 24 hours. It’s a hunt for innovation that Director, Scott Jenkins, took across China – from Guangzhou to Shenzhen and Hong Kong – as part of a UK trade mission.

As a member and delegate of the British Chamber of Commerce, Scott’s trip was packed with networking, technology showcases and logistics tours but more importantly for us here at Autohorn, he got a closer look at the future of electric vehicles.

From what he saw it’s no wonder more UK drivers are embracing Chinese EVs for everyday driving, business travel and short-term rental. As more UK drivers look for smarter, greener and more affordable transport, the trip reinforced something we already believe strongly: Chinese EV manufacturers are changing the game.

Inside the trade mission tour

Scott Jenkins, Autohorn Director in China

Along with other delegates of the British Chamber of Commerce, British Chamber of Commerce South China and the China-Britain Business Council, Scott completed a whistlestop tour of China’s thriving industries. From talking economics with HSBC to visiting container terminals to see how Chinese exports reach the rest of the world, it’s these delegations and conversations that are forging better cooperation between the UK and China.

“Beyond the formal stuff, it was the conversations and connections that really stood out,” says Scott, now back on the ground at Autohorn HQ in York. “There’s huge appetite for collaboration and cooperation, and a clear sense of momentum across the region.”

But what’s our biggest takeaway? Whether it’s China’s logistics network or its willingness to invest in new tech, the region and the automotive brands coming out of it are only getting stronger.

Shenzhen: the home of EV innovation

British Camber of Commerce Trade mission BYD city, 2026For any automotive fan, no trip to China would be complete without a trip to what is often referred to as BYD city and, of course, Scott was more than happy to pay a visit.

The sprawling facility in Shenzhen, in the South of China, offers the perfect insight as to why BYD is thriving outside of the country and why you’re probably seeing more Seals and Dolphins on the UK streets.

Once best known for making batteries, BYD has evolved into one of the biggest EV brands in the world and it’s clear why when you see their operations. From vehicle production and cutting-edge design to latest EV battery technology and software the advancements are extraordinary.

“It was amazing to see the latest technology in front of us but it was also a great reminder that nothing replaces being there in person,” says Scott. “Seeing operations up close, understanding the market dynamics and building relationships face-to-face is how we’ll build closer relationships in trade and how we can make transport better for everyone.”

Features and technologies that still feel next generation are already becoming mainstream in China and it’s why BYD is excelling.

Bringing that experience back to Autohorn

The obligatory airport Toblerone for the team isn’t the only thing Scott has bought back from China, it’s the insights and knowledge from the visit that our helping us deliver quicker, easier and better car rental for our customers.

We’re always looking ahead at how the car industry is changing and what these developments means for our customers. What have we seen in 2026? Drivers want lower running costs, comfortable and tech-driven interiors, smoother driving and more eco-friendly travel – EV companies, just like BYD are ticking all of the boxes.
