Our favourite York shopping spots at Christmas
York Christmas Market – St Nicholas Fair
Where else could we start but with the jewel in York’s Christmas crown, York Christmas Market?
If you’re not a fan of crowds, this might not be for you, as the outdoor market drew just under one million visits in 2025. However, if you don’t mind a bit of hustle and bustle, then it’s a fun alternative to regular York shopping that will really get you in the Christmas spirit.

With 75 traditional Alpine chalets lining Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square, it’s the perfect place to browse everything from artists and jewellers to gin and gingerbread. Discover local makers and enjoy delicious festive food while soaking up the Christmas atmosphere
The 2026 market runs from 12 November to 21 December, Wednesday to Monday, with Tuesdays reserved as a rest day.
Best for: festive atmosphere and locally made gifts.
Where to park: Coppergate car park, on Piccadilly (YO1 9NX), is within walking distance of the market and nearby shopping streets. Charges apply, and the car park locks at 7pm.
Monks Cross Shopping Park
Monks Cross Shopping Park is a convenient out-of-town shopping destination with well-known fashion, homeware and lifestyle retailers. If you have a child’s list to Santa to tick off, then there’s a huge toy shop, as well as several supermarkets for stocking filler choccies and wrapping paper.
Although it may not have the same Christmas sparkle as York Christmas Market, Monks Cross is ideal for ticking off several presents in one trip. Plus, with late opening hours, it’s ideal for a spot of after-work shopping. There are also places to stop for a coffee or something to eat.
Best for: everyday essentials and high-street favourites.
Where to park: free parking is available for up to four hours in the main car park. Shoppers staying longer should register their vehicle at the information centre next to New Look to avoid an unauthorised overstay charge. Some store-specific parking areas have shorter limits.
Christmas Shop York – Käthe Wohlfahrt
If you love Christmas, Käthe Wohlfahrt is a must-visit on your York shopping trip. Tucked away on historic Stonegate, this magical Christmas shop brings a little festive sparkle to the city all year round.
Spread across two floors of a beautiful historic building, you’ll find intricately hand-painted decorations, glass ornaments, wooden keepsakes and unique gifts inspired by traditional German craftsmanship. Don’t miss the first-floor Cuckoo Clock Room, either!
Best for: Christmas enthusiasts and festive keepsakes.
Where to park: Bootham Row car park (YO30 7BP), is a convenient option near York Minster and within walking distance of Stonegate. Charges apply.
York Designer Outlet – McArthur Glen
If you like your shops all under one roof, then you’ll love our next York shopping pick. McArthur Glen has a wide selection of fashion, footwear, accessories, homeware at discounted prices.

If you have mainly adults on the list and are confident in choosing clothes as gifts, then the designer outlet has some great options. It’s a great place to pick up your hero present, such as a designer handbag, and Hotel Chocolat is brilliant for picking up little gifts for teachers and colleagues. There’s also plenty of choice for a sit-down meal, making this a great option for meeting up with friends for a Christmas outing.
Best for: designer deals and bad weather shopping.
Where to park: York Designer Outlet (YO19 4TA) has around 2,700 parking spaces, with free on-site parking. However, be warned, in peak season these spaces fill up fast so get there early if you’re shopping on a weekend.
Artisan Christmas Fairs
If you’re looking for an authentic festive atmosphere and independent makers, but can’t face the crowds of York Christmas Market you’re in luck. York is surrounded by artisan Christmas fairs just a short drive away where you can discover unique gifts, handmade treasures and one-of-a-kind finds, all under one roof. From independent makers and local craftspeople to delicious food halls packed full of tasty goodies, these markets are packed with inspiration for those hard-to-buy-for people on your list.
