Can I drive a van on my license? Your van hire questions answered

White Van Driving Country Road

Whether you’re moving house, starting a small business, organising a large delivery or just need extra cargo space for a weekend project, hiring a van can be a practical solution. But one of the most common questions most people ask: “Can I drive a van on my licence?”

The good news for most people in the UK is yes, but with some important conditions. In this guide we’ll explain exactly what your licence allows you to drive, what vehicle sizes you can legally operate and what you need to know before you get behind the wheel of your van rental.

What licence do you need to drive a van?

In the UK, every driving license has a category, and this determines the type of vehicles you are legally eligible to drive. The most common category is a Category B – Standard Car Licence.

If you hold a full UK Category B driving licence –the standard licence most people receive after passing a car test – you’re permitted to drive vans with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of up to 3,500kg. This is the legal weight of the van when fully loaded, including the vehicle itself, the driver, passengers, fuel and all cargo.

This covers all our vans at Autohorn, including our largest extra-long wheelbase vans. You can even drive many larger Luton style vans on a Category B license.

If you’re confused, you can check which vehicles you can drive on your licence through on the government website.

Can I hire a short wheelbase van on my license?

Yes, you can hire a short wheelbase van such as a Volkswagen Transporter or similar on a standard UK driving license.

A short wheelbase (SWB) van is around 4.8-5.5 metres long (full vehicle length). These vans are ideal if you’re driving a large vehicle for the first time as they still have a large load capacity but their smaller size means they’re easy to manoeuvre on city streets. This size van would be ideal for charity shop runs, couriers or setting up for a market stall.

Can I hire a long wheelbase van on my licence?

Yes, you can hire a long wheelbase van on a standard UK driving licence. Longer in length, at around 5.8-7 metres, long wheelbase vans such as a Volkswagen Crafter have a much bigger cargo space as well as added height. They’re less agile than their smaller models, however the added balance does provide a smoother drive for long motorway stretches. A long wheelbase van is ideal for transporting timber and large items that can’t be dismantled.

Can I hire an extra-long wheelbase van on my licence?

Yes, if the MAM doesn’t exceed the 3.5 tonne limit. Popular extra-long wheelbase, like the Iveco Daily, are available to drive on your standard UK driving license. This style of vans, with their extra height and length, offer you the maximum cargo space for large jobs. Ideal for tackling a house move, transporting rolls of carpet or very heavy items.

Can I hire a Luton van on my driving Licence?

A Luton van is a larger van where the load area extends over the cab. Many can still be hired with a standard UK license as long as they don’t exceed the 3.5 tonnes.

  • Built-up areas: 30mph

Can I rent a van on a foreign driving licence?

Yes, you can rent a van using a non-UK driving licence as long as it’s valid in the country where the rental takes place and was issued at least 12 months before the rental start date.

If your licence is written in a different language or uses non-Latin characters, you must also provide an International Driving Permit along with your original licence. When renting outside your country of residence, you will usually need to present a valid passport or national ID.
